“Spencer is one of Kansas City’s most promising up-and-coming drummers. His touch and approach to the kit demonstrate a clear relation to the masters. While Spencer’s playing is at times a sophisticated reflection of his own calm demeaner, he is quite skilled at picking the perfect moment to light up the bandstand, elevating the music to a higher level.”

“Spencer is the kind of student who has a genuine intrinsic motivation- his pursuit of jazz drumming is rooted in an authentic interest in and respect for the music, rather than simply the license to identify as an artist. I'm looking forward to seeing what the future holds for him.”

“What a fine percussionist and student Spencer Smith is! I had the pleasure of working with him for over three years both as a drum set student and in my Jazz/World Percussion Ensemble here at the Conservatory. He has the respect and admiration of the entire faculty here at the UMKC Conservatory, as well as all the students he has worked with in classes, combos, and big bands. He is always well-prepared, consistent in attendance, and punctual. His work in our Jazz/World Percussion Ensemble was noteworthy and all of his composition projects demonstrated a depth beyond his years. In addition, he takes it upon himself to help younger students that are having a challenging time with their studies with his thoughtful encouragement and in any way he can. He certainly is an asset to our Jazz Studies program at UMKC. I can only say that I have the highest expectations for him in any career path he chooses to follow.”
