Spencer began playing drums at age eight. His mother discovered that at a young age he loved to tap on anything he could find, so she gifted him a snare drum and enrolled him in his first drum lesson. Gradually he gained control of the snare drum by learning rudiments and earned center snare drum in marching band. At the time his favorite drummer to listen and play along with was John Bonham, until he heard Joe Morello on Time Out, which opened the door to his curiosity of jazz drumming. In 2017 he received the outstanding senior award for Jazz.
Now a graduate of the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance, he has played in groups including: Five Star Jazz Band, The Musetet, KCFLO, The Artist Community Project, and has been a member of the conservatory big band for three years directed by Bobby Watson and Mitch Butler. Spencer continues to stay in Kansas City for the music and arts scene, community, and barbecue.
